About this deal

The ship featured on the reverse design, which first appeared on the 1937 halfpenny pattern of Edward VIII, is based on Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hind, in which he became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe between 1577 and 1580. Some coin historians believe it was Brady himself who took the photograph, others that it was more likely the work of one of his assistants.

Australian halfpennies depicting George V feature him robed and crowned on the obverse, facing to the left and from bust up. The effigy of George V used is known to "grace the vast majority of Australia’s rarest and most desirable Commonwealth coins." [1] The original reverse of the bronze version of the coin, designed by Leonard Charles Wyon, is a seated Britannia, holding a trident, with the words HALF PENNY to either side. Issues before 1895 also feature a lighthouse to Britannia's left and a ship to her right. Various minor adjustments to the level of the sea depicted around Britannia, and the angle of her trident were also made over the years. Some issues feature toothed edges, while others feature beading. Coin grading agencies assess the color of pennies and assign them one of three classifications: red, red and brown, or brown. a b Rees, Peter (2017). Each penny was further divided into 4 farthings, thus a pound contained 480 halfpennies and a shilling contained 24 halfpennies. Coins with an obverse and reverse design that should never have gone together are known as “mules”. This type of Mint error is very rare – which makes it very valuable.

Proof Coin - Halfpenny, Australia, 1923". Museums Victoria Collections . Retrieved 20 November 2020. We are indebted to Declan Magee Coins and Numista member Sjoelund for their kind permission to reproduce the images below which list some of the varieties for this series. The 1916I Mule carries the standard Australian reverse for halfpennies of 1916, however, it is distinguishable by its obverse, which is that of an Indian quarter anna coin. It is Australia's rarest Commonwealth coin issued for circulation, and when its significance was first recognised in the Australian numismatic press in the mid 1960s, it was described as the "biggest find in coin history, and one of the most valuable." [5] There are currently 5 known specimens in existence, [2] and it is predicted that there are 6–10 examples in existence. [7] Proofs come in three different qualities. Because they were never intended for circulation, all proof coins are red. But if there is an attractive contrast between reflective “fields” – the flat parts of the coin – and frosted raised parts of the design, the coin is classified as a “cameo”.

George VI issue coins feature the inscription GEORGIVS VI D G BR OMN REX F D IND IMP before 1949, and GEORGIVS VI D G BR OMN REX FIDEI DEF thereafter. Unlike the penny, halfpennies were minted throughout the early reign of Elizabeth II, bearing the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA BRITT OMN REGINA F D in 1953, and ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F D thereafter. The denomination is inscribed boldly in full capitals long the lower edge of the coin. At the top, curving along the upper coin edge, are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. Coins are graded from 1 to 70, with 1 signifying the poorest condition while still being identifiable. A coin graded 70 is flawless.
