About this deal

Another wonderful, charming, thought provoking, entertaining story about my favorite characters living on Scotland Street in Edinburg, Scotland. Two of these were linen, and formed the core of his summer garb, while the others were of an unidentified fabric that Angus referred to as one hundred per cent un-natural. I would like to talk about the things we talk about, the small things, whatever happened in the world. Bertie confides his unhappy situation to his best friend in Edinburgh, Ranald Braveheart Macpherson, and the rest is (hilarious) history.

These include the 44 Scotland Street novels, first published as a serial novel in the Scotsman, the Isabel Dalhousie novels, the Von Igelfeld series and the Corduroy Mansions novels. Bruce finds himself involved in a real estate scheme that's illegal but he doesn't want to lose face with his peers especially as one of them is an old school mate. Written with wit and wisdom and containing a gentle, thought-provoking philosophy about life, the ability to change, love, friendship, community, art, admitting one's defects, and taking control. That quality of honesty was difficult to define – in shoes at least – but one knew it when one encountered it.The aptly named but surprisingly couth Fat Bob is a professional strongman who raises the tax-deductibility of bacon rolls for his occupation. Catch up once again with the extended family at No 44, in this the latest instalment in the Scotland Street series.

We all know the range and breadth of Alexander’s writing, not all of it comic but much of it SO comic it keeps us afloat through dark times. If the Scottish diet had become Mediterranean, then Scottish furniture had become Scandinavian – light and minimalist, consigned to its owners in flat boxes and requiring to be assembled before use – and then reassembled, once the instruction booklet had been read. Warm hearted, humorous and wonderfully wise, Love in the Time of Bertie offers philosophical insight as well as sartorial elegance. Bruce, a strikingly handsome surveyor, is a narcissist who thinks all women should want to date him. Thus a lecture entitled 'New Directions in Scottish Conceptual Art,' where the speaker states 'we don't need paintings, we need experiences,' leaves Angus worried about the future of Scottish painting. Suits, he thought, might be going the way of men’s hats and ties – both of which were now seen only infrequently on any man under forty. I'm happy with the threads that seem to be a little more tied off, but there are plenty of loose ends to keep going. sees publication of three new novels which fall into this area: 'The Forever Girl'; 'Fatty O’Leary’s Dinner Party'; and 'Emma' – a reworking of the classic Jane Austen novel. So Angus relegated the Lobb brogues to a cupboard and wore, instead, a pair of Hush Puppies of tobacco-coloured suede, threaded with red laces – a touch that met with the wholehearted approval of his fellow students.

Ladies' Detective Agency series, the Isabel Dalhousie Series, the Portuguese Irregular Verbs series, and the 44 Scotland Street series. Meanwhile, Angus's wife Domenica, an independent anthropologist, is planning to stealthily replace her husband's two antiquated dress jackets. Another lovely poem from Angus, someone new in Big Lou's life, adventures for Bertie and Ranald, and shocking comeuppance for Bruce. He had two suits – a dark one that had been made for him twenty-two years ago and that was described by Domenica as his kirk suit, and a three-piece, tweedy outfit that Domenica had disparagingly labelled his bookie’s suit. My sincere thank you to Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for the absolute privilege of reading this most charming series.Every book in the series offers an escape from reality, each character is well developed and it’s always like catching up with old friends when you read what antics they’ve been up to. Angus had never fallen for that particular attempt to sugar the pill of local deindustrialisation and the deskilling that went with it.

His regular shoes – described by Domenica as his daily boots – were a pair of brown brogues made by the Northampton shoe-maker, Joseph Cheaney. I look forward to finding out how each character will grow and change in every book, and in this new installment a lot of my favourite people have exciting news and adventures. I never want to say too much for fear of giving away any spoilers, but suffice it to say that everything I've ever wanted to have happen for some of my most-loved and most-despised characters happened in this book. She bemoans how independent privately-funded scholars suffer the condescension of academics, and Angus muses on the alter-ego endowed on him by the bureaucracy. Bertie for example has aged maybe one year in 14 books while others have married and now have toddlers.Sister Maria-Fiore, who's a conventional thinker, will never give the prize to an outré modern artist. Angus accepted the gift with a degree of concealed embarrassment: at the age of eighteen, when one is busy shaking off parental influence, who wants a pair of bespoke Lobb shoes? He is dismayed that he will be absent from his friends, schoolmates, loving grandmother, and weak-willed father, whom he adores. Wishing that his sibling might go instead, Bertie remarks, not for the first time, on the resemblance of his baby brother Ulysses to the psychotherapist Irene forced him to see, Dr Fairbairn. Through conversations over tea and coffee we are fortunately privy to their gossip, analyses of others, doling out advice, doing crosswords and philosophizing.
