About this deal

it is an excellent book [and] well worth a read * Cycling Europe Podcast * Charts the incredible story of cyclist Beryl Burton, who set a world record in 1967 and was Britain's best all-rounder for 25 successive years.

The book explains her upbringing, her home life while riding, her athletic feats and her sad premature death. Despite her obvious intellect, Burton preferred manual work and often spent time between races labouring on farms. Her motivation, sparked by appalling childhood illness, is as fascinating as her achievements are stunning. Charts the incredible story of cyclist Beryl Burton, who set a world record in 1967 and was Britain's best all-rounder for 25 successive years. Denise was born (with no choice) and then was essentially abandoned so Beryl could pursue her own dreams. Alyson Rudd, chairwoman of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award * The Times Best Sports Book of The Year * Jeremy Wilson provides a convincing case in his tribute to this elusive and remarkable figure -- Best Sport Books of the Year * The 42 * An incredible story about one of the nation's greatest-ever athletes that you probably haven't heard of - until now.

It is also true to say that her achievements rarely received the recognition they deserve – until now, perhaps. Absolutely amazing talent who sadly is little known amongst people of a certain age even if they are cyclists. A woman determined to prove her worth against all comers, time on the bike was time away from the expectations of cycling’s various governing bodies, life at home and society at large – and in the end, it was the time that mattered. For anyone interested in the social history of the disability movement in Canada, this important memoir is required reading. However, everything comes to us at the right time — and Jeremy Wilson’s biography on British cycling legend Beryl did just that.

For the first time, he also provides the jaw-dropping answer to how fast she would still be on modern cycling technology. He presents a powerful new perspective on the deep psychological mechanisms behind birthday parties, royal coronations, fire-walking and terrifying rites of passage. The book elicits a range of emotions from awe at her achievements to being disturbed by some of her eccentricities and inevitability bewildered and saddened by the actions of cycling’s governing bodies and many of those who ran them at the time. At the very least Beryl Burton should be talked about like pre-TV era male footballers who hold records that will never be broken (Dixie Dean etc). It’s an easy read in the best sense—accessible, highly informative, and enticing to find out what happened next.
