About this deal

One day I put the squares on the elephant, then I looked at him and the name Elmer, Elmer the Elephant, the usual alliteration, came to me. With a younger age groups you can use Elmer's multicoloured patchwork body to identify different colours. The fun colourful illustrations convey the story extremely well and offer us a great pictorial sense of emotion.

Deservedly a modern classic, with over ten million copies of his books sold worldwide, Elmer's subtle message, that it is OK to be different, resonates with children across the world. On leaving college he drew regularly for, among others, Punch , Reader’s Digest , and The Times Educational Supplement .

And also there is the fact that Elmer's differences are a bit childlike - the colourfulness and love of practical jokes and laughter are things that a young child can identify with, whereas the other elephants could be seen as being more like adults. Nevertheless, when the Andersen Press reprinted a shortened version of the original Elmer story in 1989, the gentle message of inclusion and acceptance was part of the book's immediate success, which spawned a series of subsequent books and wide range of popular merchandise about the patchwork Elephant.Elmer is the story of an elephant that is noticeably different to the others; he is a brightly coloured patchwork elephant. Little readers love the fantastic book, which helps them learn that it’s ok to be different, just like Elmer. After hatching a plan and rolling around in berry juice to make himself ‘elephant colour’ Elmer decides that being part of the crowd is too boring and realises that being different isn’t so bad after all.

The primal focus of the story is on ‘Elmer ‘who is an elephant that does not resemble the other elephants in his herd. Elmer es un personaje super divertido y querido por todos que nos enseña que ser diferentes no esta mal y que de hecho, tiene muchas cosas buenas. But the baby elephants want to hear it, so Elmer and his friends race to remember it before bedtime . Each decorated a different colour, the racers set off around the course and discover things about themselves – Blue may be first and Orange second, but White is kind, Pink and Violet are funny and Yellow is a cheat. With its sturdy pages for little fingers, this gift is the perfect introduction to the world of Elmer. They become quiet and sombre, and are delighted to find him again, when he reveals himself first through his personality, then from the rain washing off the berry juice. A natural rebel and iconoclast, this was reflected even in his pigmentation, which was a bizarre patchwork of psychedelic colors.

Elmer is a very likeable character with a huge sense of fun that children would definitely be able to relate to. They are all grey – whereas he is remarkably dissimilar with patchwork with lots of different colours! The bold colours and simple rhyming story of ELMER'S DAY will enchant very young children, who will love learning the lines by heart. Since then there have been numerous Elmer books, a wide range of merchandise and a TV series, with the latest Elmer book being released as recently as 2016.

David McKee's first book about Elmer turned this adorable patchwork elephant into a nursery favourite. However, when Elmer changes his appearance to fit in to his surroundings he is no longer recognisable by the other elephants. David McKee’s character Elmer first appeared in 1968 in the book of the same name, and since then he has been inspiring children and adults with his infinite wisdom. There is a pretty high picture to text ratio but there is still quite a substantial amount of text, usually a few sentences on each page.
