During several road trips between 1983 and 1989, Lee documented African Americans living, playing, loving and surviving, often amid the grinding poverty one might associate with an impoverished nation or another era – anywhere but America, one of the wealthiest nations on the planet. The resulting portfolio of atmospheric images and graceful portraits was only recently collected as a monograph, published by Hunters Point Press. Talking with Brown, Lee compares artistic creativity to the limited timespan of a professional athlete. A new book—the first-ever collection of Lee’s work—and a solo exhibition in New York make the case that he is one of the great overlooked luminaries of American picture-making.

Lee, born to Chinese immigrants in New York, moved to Tenessee to develop a photography program in the early 80s for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he continues to teach.

For all that, the experience of travelling in the deep south shook him up and sharpened his sense of injustice. Every photograph was a collaboration: an interchange of conversation and ideas and then the granting of permission. It includes 24 black-and white photographs, framed in black and matted, and hung against light grey walls in the single room gallery space. I wanted them to be open ended and subject to the many different interpretations that people brought to them.

Cattle gather precariously near an open pit, while in another frame kudzu threatens to swamp every edifice. Mysterious strangers would show up at our apartment late at night only to depart before dawn without saying a word to anyone other than my father. White strolled into lectures barefoot and encouraged his often bemused technology students to heighten their awareness of the creative process by practising meditation and reading Zen Buddhist texts.

Over twenty books of his photographs have been published, and his work has been collected and shown in museums throughout the United States and Europe. The intention is to display ads that are relevant and engaging for the individual user and thereby more valuable for publishers and third party advertisers. Baldwin Lee, now seventy-one, grew up in the insular enclave of New York City’s Chinatown and, fulfilling his parents’ expectations, went to MIT in the late 1960s to study science and technology.
