About this deal

The main part that I experimented with was using contrast paints over the silver colors on the disc and weapons. I used Talassar Blue over the ends of weapons, and Magos Purple, Leviadon Blue, and Volupus Pink over the discs. I have to say that Magos Purple really doesn’t show up well. I also did the Tzeentch fire underneath the bases with these colors. That pretty much covers it. I’m happy with the final model and it wasn’t nearly as much time to paint as I expected it might take. After that, it was Stormhost Silver and Contrast Flesh Tearers Red on the weapon, Contrast Ultramarines Blue& Contrast Apothecary White on the robes. I also broke out my favorite new paint, Tesseract Glow, and added it to the recesses on the weapon and crystal. Here I practically flooded the indents on the weapon and once it dried I ended up with this lovely effect. My method of painting Necrons is simple. It’s made up of a few simple steps that when added together looks great. White highlights: White is put on the sharp corners of the face, dabbed along the bright areas of the gauss tube, and on the most raised portions of the gauss coils and wires. At this stage I could call this guy done, he’s ready for the battlefield.

Overall I’m very happy with the Necron lads I’ve finished up to this point, and I’m eager to paint the rest of the box! Finally, I glue on all the sundry vegetation, as I don’t want to get paint on it. The key to this stuff is layering it and slowly building it up to look overgrown. I use some slightly thinned PVA glue for all of it. The Necrons are a faction in the Warhammer 40K universe known for their metallic, robotic appearance. Sotek Green would be a great choice for painting their armor and machinery, as it complements the silver and gold tones commonly used on Necron models. I started by painting the flesh with Citadel The Fang. I then washed the model – the top was washed with Drakenhof NIghtshade and the bottom was washed with Druchii Violet to give it more of a purple hue. I then began painted the flesh with lighter layers, painting the lower body with a mix of white and Xereus Purple and working up on the upper body with mixes of Reaper Snow Shadow and The Fang. The general process I’m using for this is basecoat -> shade -> highlight with the original basecoat -> highlight with lighter shades. Stipple Reikland Fleshshade on the bottom half of armor panels, and downward facing parts of arms, and along bottom of rib cage. (The stippling can be more of splotching and even slashes.) Hit The stippling can be more of splotching and even slashes the recesses with Reikland, then do an all over smooth wash when it dries, this is more as a filter than shade.I am also curious if anyone has used GW's Lupercal Green as a base followed by SoH Green and then highlight with something else like Kabalite or Sybarite. Perhaps using some Coelia Greenshade either over it or as a recess shade. The Tyranids are a faction that is known for their biomorphs and organic look. Sotek Green would be great for painting the carapace, chitin and other organic parts of the models. Gradually mix in steadily more Ulthuan Grey and layer up each time until it’s nearly pure Ulthuan Grey gradually getting further and further from the recesses

If you are looking to save time it’s worth remembering with stuff like this that even basic layering like this blends together very well on the table top. Even in close up shots kind of gets smoothed out when you have sharp contrasts like the recess colours and edge highlights going on.In terms of building the models, things were pretty easy going, but there are a couple of takeaways I’d want to use if I was doing them again: Next, zenithally airbrush on Citadel Zandri Dust at about a 60 degree angle. You’re looking to keep the Rhinox Hide in the underside and crevices of the model. One of the great things about Necrons is that the rank and file don’t have much colour to worry about – your typical Necron Warrior tends to be mostly grey/silver with the focal point of the model being the stonking great big raygun they carry. The more elite they are, the more colours you’ll want to smoosh on there so to be a bit more comprehensive I’ve gone with some Necron Triach Praetorians.
