About this deal

A more detailed Cat5e cable FAQ explanation on Cat5e UTP vs FTP can be found in our knowledge centre HERE . What is Armoured Cat5e Cable In many cases, it is recommended not to join any data cables but rather replace them with a new dedicated link. However, in some cases, it is more sensible to join. There are two main ways to join a cat5e cable

In day-to-day practical terms, most users will chiefly be interested in what internet speeds or data transfer speed each standard support. Although the additional shielding provides additional external protection, it doesn’t affect the overall Cat5e cable performance. Thus, both UTP and FTP are still capable of 100Mhz and 1 Gigabit transmission.Cat5 was the original new category in the data cabling index. However, since 2001, Cat5e has been the standard. Cat5 was limited to 100Mb transmission. Cat5e was implemented to achieve 1 Gigabit Ethernet. Cat5 is no longer manufactured and is rarely seen, even in older buildings. Cat5e is capable of upto gigabit networking speeds (this is dependent on your network). Our cat5e cables are flexible and easy to install. The standard assembly for basic Cat5 cable is often U/UTP, while many high-quality Cat5e Ethernet cables are manufactured with at least some form of additional shielding built-in. This shielding helps to protect the carried signal from several forms of interference, minimising the risk of data corruption or network connection loss. In addition to the basic Ethernet cable standards and the stranded vs. solid designs, there are also other manufacturing specifications available for each type and category. These are commonly abbreviated as:

U/FTP (Unshielded/Foil Twisted Pair): The individual twisted pairs each have their layer of additional foil shielding around them, but the cable only has the basic outer sheathing Cat5e cable is a data cable that is classified as a twisted pair data cable. Thus, it is constructed of 8 separate cores split into four pairs of colours. The pairs are twisted together and, hence, the category of twisted pair. The Cat5e cable pairs are a solid and white/solid combination. Furthermore, the colours are Blue, Orange, Brown and Green. What is the maximum Cat5e speed? U/UTP (Unshielded/Unshielded Twisted Pair): Neither the individual twisted pairs nor the cable has any additional shielding built-in. Only the basic protections - the standard insulation around each twisted wire, and the cable sheath itself - are present The best way to tell the difference is on the sheath of the cable. The cable marking will have code numbers and other digits. However, it will also note if the cable is Cat5e or Cat6. In addition, the Cat6 cable will have a plastic central divider between the four pairs. Cat5e will not have this. However, this is dependent on different manufacturers, so not always 100% the case. Do Cat6 cables work with Cat5?See to the right for a Cat5e cable diagram, showing the basic construction of different types of Cat5e Ethernet cables.

Cat5 cable is designed to carry data over a wired network connection at speeds of 10 Mbps (Ethernet) or 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet). You will often see this written as 10/100 Ethernet when shopping for Cat5 cable online. This means that if your local network or incoming internet connection runs at between 10-100 Mbps (also known as a 100BASE-T network), Cat5 Ethernet cable should be able to handle the required data throughput at full speed, with no loss or delay. UTP stands for unshielded twisted pair, and FTP is Foil Twisted Pair. Therefore, FTP is similar to a standard UTP cable with a foil shield surrounding the inner cores. Thus, the shielding provides additional protection from external noise inference. However, in any data cabling installation, the overall link is only as good as its weakest part. Hence, Cat5 and Cat6 are compatible, but it’s not the desired solution. Therefore, if using different categories, the link will only work as well as the lowest grade element. This combination of different systems is sometimes seen when companies are moving and want to retain parts of their existing infrastructure and plan to upgrade at a later stage due to budgets. We are obviously asked a lot of questions about our data cabling installations. Below are the most common Cat5e cable FAQs that we receive. We recommend to use faceplates with full copper cables as oppose to crimping them for our plates see the QS numbers below:

However, there are valid use cases for choosing longer runs of Cat5e wiring, in which case you can easily buy reels in lengths of 1000ft or more. Common pre-cut lengths you will see on sale at UK suppliers include 30cm/300mm, 50cm/500mm, 1m, 2m, 3m, 5m, 10m, 30m, 100m, 152m, and 305m. We have written a more in-depth Cat5e cable FAQ explaining cabling costs in this article Cat5e vs Cat6 Cat5 cable specifications dictate it should be able to handle data transfer over Ethernet networks at frequencies (also known as bandwidth, or data-carrying capacity) of up to 100 MHz. Cat5e offers superior performance and is rated for frequencies of up to 350 MHz. This is due in part to its stricter performance requirements for things like crosstalk (interference between individual wires), attenuation and return loss.
