Labyrinth is an undisputed tabletop classic, having first emerged onto the scene in 1986. The family board game has seen many different iterations in the decades since and continues to remain a favourite of players both young and old. Formerly known as The aMAZEing Labyrinth, this board game for two to four players provides a simple yet immersive experience that translates nicely into a Disney board game. Disney Codenames uses both pictures and words – the clue giver must give a one-word clues to their team and the teammates must to try to identify the Disney items on the cards.
Rules for different games – each an observation game with a speed element – are included with Dobble, with the first player to find a match either gaining or getting rid of a card. Multiple versions of Dobble have been published, with images in each version ranging from Star Wars to Finding Dory. As with the original board game, Disney Pixar Labyrinth presents players with a board displaying a maze made up of fixed tiles that they must navigate through. Players can progress through the labyrinth by sliding in tiles that show different pathways - opening up new routes throughout the maze - and which might throw up various obstacles that the players need to overcome, as well as glittering treasures. By sliding tiles in and out of the rows of the maze players can push a tile out of the other side of the board; this lone tile is what the next player must add to the labyrinth on their turn. If a player wants to win then they need to carefully slide the right tiles to create a path through as many treasures as they can, before eventually leading to an exit. Our family LOVES the original Codenames. It is our “go to” game and has brought an insane amount of laughter and a little bit of irritation. We love that Disney has a version of this game out!
Disney Princess See the Story from Funko Games is the latest addition to this Disney menagerie. It plays two to four players ages four and up. Gameplay Overview: On a player’s turn, the well containing all the Story clues will be replenished from the previous turn. Then, all players will be trying to find two clues that match a Disney princess, such as Flounder or Moana’s canoe. The fastest player tosses their player coin into the well and makes their guess. If they’re right, they take one of these two Story clues and add them to their player board. If they’re wrong, other players starting from the left choose one Story clue and add it to their board. On a player’s turn, if there’s a match already present, they can choose to not refill the well and make a guess. When compared to many of the other board games found on this list, Disney Villainous can appear a little overwhelming. However, don’t let its initial complexities put you off as it’s actually a fantastic beginner board game for newbies looking to take their first steps into the tabletop hobby. Disney Villainous really commits to its good-to-be-bad theme and provides a refreshingly unique flavour of Disney that’s perfect for those fans that always liked the villains best. As I mentioned earlier, successfully matching is the most exciting aspect to See the Story. The Disney princesses are how they will get you to buy the game. But whether this combination paired with being Speed and Connect Four will be enough to keep your family interested is something you’ll have to consider. I certainly appreciated that there are different ways to modify the game based on desired play style or age group. I do think the normal rules for playing would be more interesting for older kids. But for me, I just didn’t see a lot of fun in this game. We successfully played it and it was fine. I just don’t think my daughter or anyone else in the house is going to ask to play it again. There are other Disney games that I’m sure would be more fun and worth your time and money. Disney Princess: My FairyTale Adventure – Nintendo Wii Dobble: Disney Princesses does exactly what it says on the tin. (Literally! The game comes in a tin.) This super-popular matching game from Asmodee meets everyone’s favourite Disney princesses. Can you match the likes of Belle, Snow White, Ariel and Rapunzel?But we made our way through the game. There were a few times she couldn’t identify a match when there was one, because some clues are not obvious like familiar characters. The game includes a reference of what clues belong to which princesses, which is helpful. But unfortunately, this then forces players to have to memorize some of these pictured clues and their association, knowledge I don’t think will carry over between games for kids under seven. Some clues should be pretty easy to guess. But even I had a difficult time with some of the more obscure ones, like this flower. Rounds of Colour Brain: Disney Edition are incredibly simple. Each player holds a hand of 11 cards, each one representing a different colour: red, blue, yellow, orange and so on. Every round, someone plays a question card that players have to answer using their colour cards. For example, the question card might ask what colour Woody’s vest is. Players must then answer using the number of colour cards listed on the question card. Once everyone has placed their colour cards facedown they are flipped over, the right answer to the question card is revealed and players score points depending on whether they’ve guessed the right colour cards. Players who got the answer right score as many points as players that got it wrong - but if every player answers correctly no-one scores anything. The first to 10, wins. Ariel, Moana, Belle and Tiana are excited to join the other princess for afternoon tea at the castle, but the other princess have got lost in the forest!
