I actually find that even though this costs a few dollars more than the 212 Evo, the mounting clips are an absolute pain in the butt. The fan is decoupled from the cooling tower and then simply snapped into place once the Hyper 212 is secured. The cooling tower fins of the new Hyper 212s utilize more of the same dark chrome plating that plays well into the overall Black Edition theme, especially the non-RGB model.

This part of the installation process is probably going to be the most frustrating if you didn’t read the instructions. Positioned in a 45-degree angle and surrounding the heatpipe, each fin-blade features X-shaped vents that create areas of high and low air pressure, resulting in several controlled vortices. The original one had round heatpipes at the base with gaps, then they went to flattened and polished with gaps, then they went to flattened, polished and right next to one another, then for the black and the V2 version, they have flattened and polished with a bit of a gap between the heatpipes and the base. It’s inexpensive, you can find it pretty much anywhere, but it’s also been around for 10 years, so I was really interested to see how this Hyper 212 Evo that everybody is requesting stands up in a modern system in 2021. While the fan mount itself is adjustable, moving the 120mm fan also raises the airflow up and over the top of the cooler, lowering the efficiency of the cooler itself.

And the fan is pretty basic too, this thing doesn’t have any RGB, it maxes out at 2000 RPMs at 36dBA, and that’s pretty much it. And yes, they aren’t as durable as the metal ones that ship with a lot of other coolers, but at the same time you don’t have to worry about them falling off all the time when you are trying to manipulate the fan. I guess that really brings me to this conclusion, and I’m going to say that the 212 Evo surprised me. First, the V2 version comes with a new stepped back heatpipe design for a little bit better memory compatibility, along with a revised mounting kit, and that is super important like we are going to see pretty soon because the original 212 Evo has an ancient mounting kit that is just a bunch of parts and is a pain in the butt to install.While all units of our testing group perform well at 100% fan speeds, each of the single-fan coolers in our chart above didn’t prevent thermal throttling of the CPU during the 50% fan speed tests. The updated mounting hardware for the new Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo v2 allows for a simpler installation than some of the older 212 models. they didn't show the contact area in the photos, strange, the 212 was famous for it's exposed copper heatpipes on the bottom of the contact surface. It is also paired with Cooler Masters' new SickleFlow 120 fan to improve cooling and acoustic performances.

One design element that does add to the aesthetics is the embossed CoolerMaster logo on the top fin,which does look good. Both coolers support nearly every current Intel and AMD desktop processor socket except for Threadripper and offer a two-year warranty. The base of the cooler mated well with the face of our Intel Core i9-10850K CPU IHS and provided a quality thermal compound spread, showing consistent contact across the entirety of the processor with all four heatpipes directly interfaced. So in this case, the Spire couldn’t pass a single run at any decibel level, which is understandable since it’s rated to top out at 95W anyways. This also allows for a greater range CPU coolers to be tested and compared without the need to configure the system differently for smaller coolers which may not handle the excessive thermal loads being generated during testing, while larger coolers might be better equipped to manage heat output produced by the i9-10850K. A milled aluminum mounting block is fixed to the heatpipes of the Evo v2 and provides much needed relief from the struggles of installing the original 212’s with the adjustable swing arm mount.
