I do prefer a good story and this one just doesn't compare to the many great children's books out there. Alternatively how much fun would it be to have to have a spider sandwich at an Autumn or winter picnic! You could also fill a sandwich first and then cut it, but the legs would be harder to stick in between the layers (trust me).

However, as I mentioned there really isn't all that many words in the book and it does read a bit like a list. But, for a veggie sandwich, you could do a spread of hummus, thinly sliced tomato, and matchstick cut carrots for the legs. I do have to complain that when the rhyming sequence is dropped, it is a little jaring, and I am not sure about the last addition/the conclusion.Although the text is enjoyable, the author breaks away from the predictable rhyme scheme a few times, which is jarring to the reader. The seafront is (still) just around the corner, and I find a bracing walk (it gets freezing when the East wind blows from the North Sea! Although my preschool kids loved this book since it was monster week in our room, this book made me a little sick to my stomach. The cover delighted me with it's fabulous color, glittery spider web, grining monster and my favorite, the spiders!

However, the illustrations are very cute and gives the children an opportunity to experiment with their own imagination. Spider sandwiches definitely isn't my favourite baby book but it is colourful and I'm sure most children will like the fun aspect of the yucky mucky food that Max the monster eats. very often as the book is read out loud to them and as they eagerly await Max's next distasteful sandwich concoction.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book by myself, however I can imagine hooting with laughter with young children, especially when I read lines such as, "He LOVES to glug slug milkshakes, through a stinky hosepipe straw.
